Spain Referees

Spain Walking Football have been delivering referee courses in 2024/25. Over 15 referees have now been trained to either Club, Tournament or International Level. The course has been developed by players and referees, and is delivered by experienced trainers.

Club referees are approved to referee recreational club sessions and to act as assistants to the fully qualified tournament referees.

Our referees have all followed the WFA/FIWFA comprehensive course to officiate at International Level Events.

The WFA Board of Directors are – Nigel Genner is Chair and head of International Development, Les Burgess is Head of the Referee Academy and responsible for co-ordinating Referee Training Courses. Tony Skelton is responsible for communication and finance and Steve Pitt is responsible for maintaining the Referee Database and co-ordinating Referee kit. This sub-committee of the Board meets regularly with Stuart Langworthy being the Board Link and Chairing quarterly meetings.

So far 2 Train-the Trainer courses have been run with the aim of training Regional Leads who will run training courses and mentoring of referees in their geographical area. The two lead trainers in Spain are David Coverdale (Costa Del Sol) and Kevin Leonardo (Costa Blanca).

Meet Our Ambassador

Mark R. Halsey (born 8 July 1961)[1] is an English retired professional football referee who was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, later based in Bolton, Greater Manchester.[2] Halsey primarily refereed in the Premier League from 1999 to 2013 and was on the league’s list of Select Group Referees from its creation in 2001 until his retirement.

His first Premier League appointment was a fixture between Wimbledon and Coventry City in August 1999 and over the course of his professional career he refereed a number of notable matches, including the FA Community Shield in 2007 and the 2008 final of the Football League Cup.

In 2009 Halsey underwent chemotherapy to treat a cancerous tumour in his throat. He returned to refereeing in the top-flight in 2010. He announced his retirement at the end of the 2012–13 season.
