Graham returns from Portugal with a silver medal
Future Star George Graham added to his growing reputation at the 2026 Portimao Boxcup where was very unfortunate not to come away with title after a highly competitive final and a hotly disputed split decision which was only determined after a judge who couldn’t separate the two was asked to vote to determine who won the bout.
Portimao welcomed over 1000 boxers from around the world in one of the most prestigious Boxcup’s in the calendar, and Graham’s 75kg category included National Champions from Ireland, France, Slovakia and Switzerland. In his first tournament at 75kg after moving up from 70kg, he defeated a 6’4 Slovakian opponent in the semi final by unanimous decision in a commanding performance before facing the highly experienced Swiss champion who went into the bout with 69 bouts on his record, many of which have come on the international stage.
Graham outboxed his opponent for long periods of the fight and there was a sense of disbelief in the arena as the decision was eventually read out after a long wait to count the scores and collect the additional vote.
Regardless of the disappointment at the result in the final, Graham can look back on an excellent weekend and will no doubt utilise the experience to continue his impressive development.
